Abstract

Hypertension is a major public health problem that requires comprehensive management through improving knowledge, promoting behavioral changes, monitoring blood pressure, and encouraging active community involvement. This community service activity aimed to improve community knowledge of hypertension, understanding of blood pressure control, and skills in appropriatelyand hygienically using celery leaves as a complementary therapy appropriately and hygienically. The activity was conducted in Citorek, Lebak Regency, Banten Province, in August 2026, and involving 30 participants, including individuals with hypertension, people at risk of hypertension, and family members. The methods included problem identification, health education, discussions, question-and-answer sessions, demonstrations, practical training on celery leaf preparation, and evaluation using pre-tests and post-tests. Participants' blood pressure was also measured before and after the activity as supporting data. The results showed an increase in the participants' mean knowledge score from 62.3 in the pre-test to 82.7 in the post-test. Participants also demonstrated improved skills in selecting, washing, and preparing celery leaves hygienically, as well as an understanding that celery use should not replace medical treatment. Blood pressure monitoring showed that the mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 151.3 mmHg to 139.8 mmHg, while the mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 94.7 mmHg to 87.6 mmHg. Community empowerment through health education and the appropriate utilization of celery leaves may serve as a promotive and preventive approach to support hypertension control. However, changes in blood pressure cannot be directly attributed solely to the use of celery leaves.
