Abstract

Basic sanitation is one of the important factors in improving the health status of the community. The availability of healthy household latrines and adequate sources of clean water plays an essential role in preventing environmentally related diseases and improving the quality of life of the community. This study aimed to describe household latrine ownership and conditions as well as clean water sources in Tumumpa Village, Tuminting District, Manado City. This study employed a quantitative method with a descriptive design and a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 94 heads of households. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires and direct observation, and were analyzed univariately using frequency distributions and percentages. The results showed that 82 respondents (87.2%) had household latrines, while 12 respondents (12.8%) did not have latrines. A total of 68 respondents (72.3%) had latrines that met health requirements, while 26 respondents (27.7%) had latrines that did not meet the requirements. Most respondents used piped water (PAM) as their main water source (48.9%), followed by wells (37.2%) and drilled wells (13.9%). In addition, the majority of respondents used water that was clear (80.9%) and odorless (86.2%), while 73.4% had a distance between the water source and septic tank that met the required standard. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that most households in Tumumpa Village, Tuminting District, Manado City, had household latrines and used clean water sources that met health requirements. However, some households still had latrine conditions and clean water sources that did not meet health standards. Therefore, increased education and community guidance regarding basic sanitation are needed.
