Abstract

Preeclampsia is a specific form of hypertension that often occurs during pregnancy, characterized by increased basal blood pressure after approximately 20 weeks of gestation, accompanied by proteinuria and/or maternal and uteroplacental organ dysfunction. This condition remains a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in Indonesia. Objective: To analyze the relationship between maternal age, parity, body mass index (BMI), type of pregnancy, and medical history with the severity of preeclampsia at Pertamedika Ummi Rosnati Hospital, Banda Aceh. Methods: This study used an observational analytical approach with a cross-sectional design utilizing medical records of pregnant women diagnosed with preeclampsia and treated at Pertamedika Ummi Rosnati Hospital, Banda Aceh, between January 2020 and December 2025. A total of 48 subjects were selected using a total sampling technique. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with a statistical significance limit set at p<0.05. Results: Body mass index was the only variable significantly associated with the severity of preeclampsia (p=0.026). In contrast, maternal age (p=0.166), parity (p=0.113), gestational age (p=1.000), and medical history (p=0.166) did not show a statistically significant association with the severity of preeclampsia. Conclusion: In this study, body mass index was a factor associated with the severity of preeclampsia. These findings demonstrate the importance of optimizing body weight before and during pregnancy as part of efforts to reduce the risk of developing more severe preeclampsia. However, studies with larger sample sizes and multivariate analysis are needed to confirm these findings.
