Abstract

Due to rapid physiological development, children under five face a high risk of nutritional disorders. Maternal literacy regarding balanced diets directly affects family meal practices and child nutrition. This study investigated how mother's nutritional knowledge relates to under-five nutritional status across three anthropometric indices (WAZ, HAZ/LAZ, and WHZ/WLZ) in coastal Belang District. A cross-sectional observational approach was implemented, assessing 55 eligible children (6–59 months) through total sampling. Data collection encompassed maternal knowledge questionnaires and direct anthropometric measurements, followed by statistical testing via Fisher's Exact Test. The majority of mothers displayed good knowledge (74.5%), and most children maintained normal nutritional status for WAZ (69.1%), HAZ/LAZ (74.5%), and WHZ/WLZ (70.9%). Statistical analysis confirmed a significant correlation between maternal knowledge and children's WAZ (p = 0.002) as well as HAZ/LAZ (p = 0.001), but failed to show a significant relationship with WHZ/WLZ (p = 0.477). Thus, maternal nutrition literacy strongly correlates with age-based growth metrics but not current body proportion metrics in this population.
