Abstract

ABSTRACTNgarumat Bumi is an annual traditional ceremony held by the community of Tambaksari Village, Ciamis, at the Geger Sunten Site, a location historically associated with the Galuh Kingdom. This study aims to examine the historical values and symbolic meanings embedded in the Ngarumat Bumi ritual, to analyze the socio-cultural mechanisms that allow the ritual to function as a conservation practice, and to describe how its meaning has transformed amid social change. A qualitative ethnographic method was applied through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the site caretaker and local community members, and documentation studies, with data validity ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that Ngarumat Bumi carries historical value as a marker of local cultural identity and as a form of historical conservation of the Geger Sunten Site, while its symbolic meaning reflects gratitude to God, respect for ancestors, communal unity, and environmental preservation. The ritual functions as a socio-cultural mechanism through cultural transmission, the maintenance of social solidarity, and environmental stewardship. Amid globalization and modernization, the ritual's meaning has expanded from a purely sacred-spiritual practice into a medium of cultural education, cultural tourism, and reinforcement of local identity, without losing its core values. This study concludes that Ngarumat Bumi is not merely a ceremonial event but an effective mechanism of community-based cultural and environmental conservation.
