Abstract

Post Operative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) is one of the common complications experienced by patients after surgery and anesthesia. PONV can cause discomfort and may interfere with the recovery process. Pharmacological therapy is commonly used to manage PONV, but complementary non-pharmacological interventions may also be implemented to support patient comfort. Peppermint aromatherapy is one of the complementary interventions that can be administered through inhalation. This community service activity aimed to implement peppermint aromatherapy and identify changes in the degree of PONV among postoperative patients at Pandega Pangandaran Regional General Hospital. The activity involved 30 postoperative patients who experienced early PONV following general or regional anesthesia. PONV was assessed before and after intervention using the Rhodes Index Nausea, Vomiting and Retching (Rhodes INVR). Peppermint aromatherapy was administered using three drops of peppermint oil in a diffuser containing 50 mL of water, inhaled from a distance of approximately 10 cm for 10–15 minutes. Before intervention, 20 participants (66.7%) experienced moderate PONV, 6 (20%) experienced severe PONV, and 4 (13.3%) experienced mild PONV. After intervention, 18 participants (60%) experienced mild PONV, 6 (20%) had no PONV, and 6 (20%) experienced moderate PONV, while no participants remained in the severe category. The activity showed a descriptive decrease in PONV severity following peppermint aromatherapy.
