Abstract

This classroom action research investigated the effectiveness of the drill method in improving forehand stroke performance in table tennis among fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Merapi Barat, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Twenty-three students (13 males, 10 females) participated in two learning cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through performance assessments using a standardized rubric evaluating initial stance, execution, follow-through, and shot accuracy. In the pre-intervention stage, only 34.97% of students achieved the minimum mastery criterion (≥70). Following the first cycle of drill-based instruction, mastery improved to 61.51% with a class average score of 72.01. After targeted adjustments in the second cycle, mastery reached 86.98% with a class average score of 80.72, surpassing the 80% classical mastery threshold. The findings demonstrate that structured and repetitive drill training significantly enhances students’ technical skills in executing the forehand stroke. The study supports the application of the drill method as an effective pedagogical strategy in physical education, particularly for developing fundamental racket sport techniques at the elementary school level.
