Abstract

This study aims to analyze the biomechanical characteristics of the right- and left-handed underhand lay up in basketball. The study employed a quantitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The sample consisted of 10 basketball players selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through observation, practical tests, and documentation using a video camera. Motion data were analyzed using the Kinovea application version 0.9.5 to measure the angles of movement during the approach phase, jump phase, and follow-through phase. The results of the study showed that the right-side underhand layup technique had an average takeoff angle of 136.9° ± 5.16°, a jump angle of 87.6° ± 17.8°, and a follow-through angle of 163.9° ± 9.85°. Meanwhile, for the left side, the initial phase angle was 129.17° ± 6.49°, the jump phase angle was 90.7° ± 26.1°, and the follow through phase angle was 162.5° ± 10.5°. The study showed that the right-side initial phase had a larger angle compared to the left side, influenced by right-hand dominance. In the jump phase, both sides exhibit angles that are relatively ideal for maintaining body balance while in the air. Meanwhile, in the follow through phase, hand angles approaching 180° indicate a sufficiently effective movement in helping to control the ball’s direction. Overall, there are significant differences between the right- and left-handed underhand lay up techniques.
