Abstract

This study discusses modernization and the social awareness of Generation Z in expressing empathy in the digital era. The research was conducted because the development of technology and social media influences how Generation Z expresses concern for social and environmental issues. This study aims to describe the forms of empathy shown by Generation Z, analyze the differences between responses on social media and real-life actions, and identify efforts that can be made to develop empathy so that it does not stop at digital activities alone. This research used a qualitative method with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation. The informants consisted of students and teachers at MAN 2 Kota Madiun. The results showed that Generation Z expresses empathy through digital activities such as sharing information, creating educational content, using hashtags, and voicing opinions on social media. Empathy is also reflected in real actions such as donations, volunteer activities, and social actions. However, digital activities are more dominant than direct actions due to factors such as easy access, limited time, limited facilities, and busyness. Efforts to increase Generation Z’s empathy can be carried out through educational content dissemination, improving digital literacy, support from the social environment, and providing social activity platforms that encourage direct participation.
