Abstract

Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis frequently experience acute pain during arteriovenous (AV) fistula needle insertion. Recurrent pain may cause discomfort, anxiety, and reduced quality of life. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to reduce pain is the Benson Relaxation Technique. This study aimed to describe the implementation of the Benson Relaxation Technique on pain intensity during AV fistula insertion in hemodialysis patients at Gunung Jati Regional Hospital, Cirebon. This study employed a descriptive case study design using an Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) approach involving five CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis through AV fistula access. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, medical record reviews, and pain assessment using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). The Benson Relaxation Technique was administered for 10–15 minutes before AV fistula insertion. The results showed a reduction in pain intensity in all patients, with pain scores decreasing from 6 to 2, 7 to 4, 6 to 4, 7 to 5, and 7 to 4, respectively. In addition, patients appeared more relaxed, calmer, and reported greater comfort during the hemodialysis procedure. The Benson Relaxation Technique can be applied as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to help reduce pain intensity during AV fistula insertion in hemodialysis patients.
