Abstract

The growing use of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) among Generation Z raises concerns about consumptive spending, debt, and the extent to which digital financial practices are consistent with the Islamic principle of Hifz al-Mal. This study aims to explore how Muslim Generation Z students in Palembang understand and practice Hifz al-Mal when using BNPL. A qualitative approach with transcendental phenomenology based on Moustakas was employed. Data were obtained through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten Muslim students aged 18-25 years who had used BNPL for at least three months. Participants were selected purposively, and the data were analyzed through epoche, horizontalization, thematic clustering, textual and structural description, and synthesis of the essence of experience. The findings identify five patterns of Hifz al-Mal meaning: rational-planned, conservative-protective, pragmatic-moderate, consumptive-adaptive, and moderate-functional. These patterns reflect differences in financial literacy, religious understanding, digital experience, and socio-economic conditions. The findings indicate that BNPL is not uniformly accepted or rejected; its meaning is negotiated according to financial capacity, perceived needs, and Islamic values.
