Abstract

Background: Diarrhea is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among toddlers in Indonesia. Efforts to prevent diarrhea in children are heavily influenced by parents' ability to practice clean and healthy living behaviors, including maintaining food hygiene, sanitation, and environmental cleanliness. Health education is a crucial step in enhancing parental capabilities; one such approach is the Buzz Group method, which fosters active discussion and group-based problem-solving. This study aimed to determine the effect of Buzz Group method education on parental ability to prevent diarrhea in toddlers in Sukowono District. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 96 respondents selected via purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. The research instrument was a questionnaire assessing diarrhea prevention ability (20 items), which had undergone validity and reliability testing. Data analysis was performed using the paired sample t-test. Results: The study results showed an improvement in parental ability to prevent diarrhea following the Buzz Group method education. The paired sample t-test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. The negative mean difference value indicated an increase in ability scores after the educational intervention. Conclusion: Buzz Group method education has a significant effect on improving parental ability to prevent diarrhea in toddlers. This method can be recommended as an effective health education alternative for enhancing family empowerment in efforts to prevent diarrhea in toddlers.
