Abstract

Salak Sidimpuan (*Salacca sumatrana Becc.) is a superior horticultural commodity unique to South Tapanuli Regency, possessing economic value and potential as a local genetic resource. Variations in agroecological conditions, particularly elevation, are hypothesized to influence the expression of the plant's morphological traits. This study aimed to characterize the vegetative and generative morphology of Salak Sidimpuan at two locations with differing elevations and to analyze the degree of morphological similarity and kinship relationships among accessions. The research was conducted in January 2026 in Sigumuru Village, West Angkola District (470 meters above sea level/masl) and Sibong-bong Village, South Angkola District (352 masl). A survey method employing purposive sampling was used. Twenty accessions were observed based on vegetative and generative traits. Data were analyzed descriptively, while kinship relationships were analyzed using NTSYS-pc software (version 2.02) and presented as a dendrogram. The results showed that qualitative traits—such as leaf sheath arrangement, flower color, flower position, fruit skin color, and seed color—exhibited a high level of uniformity across both locations. Conversely, quantitative traits—including leaf length and area, spine length, number of bunches, fruit weight, flesh texture, and fruit shape—showed variation among accessions. Dendrogram analysis revealed that most accessions shared a high degree of morphological similarity and did not cluster according to their location of origin; thus, the elevation difference of 352–470 masl did not exert a significant influence on the morphological traits of Salak Sidimpuan. This study indicates that morphological variation is influenced more by the interaction between genetic factors and local agroecological conditions than by elevation differences. These findings can serve as a basis for accession identification, genetic resource conservation, and the development of superior Salak Sidimpuan varieties. Keywords: Salacca sumatrana, morphology, kinship relationships
