Abstract

The establishment of New Autonomous Regions (DOB) is a strategic instrument of decentralization aimed at promoting equitable development and improving welfare. However, its success is largely determined by the economic readiness of the region concerned. Although studies on new autonomous regions have developed rapidly, most studies focus more on aggregate administrative and fiscal aspects, while empirical analysis based on sectoral structures capable of proving the economic viability of a prospective province is still very limited. This study aims to identify basic and superior sectors and evaluate the economic viability of the prospective Greater Tangerang Province region consisting of Tangerang Regency, Tangerang City, and South Tangerang City. The method used is Location Quotient (LQ) analysis and sectoral Klassen Typology, with Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) data at constant prices in 2010 for the period 2014-2024 sourced from the Central Statistics Agency, using Banten Province as the reference region. The results of the LQ analysis indicate that the three regions have unique and complementary sectoral specializations: Tangerang Regency excels in the industrial, energy, and financial sectors; Tangerang City in transportation and logistics; and South Tangerang City in knowledge-based modern services with nine basic sectors. In aggregate, the Klassen Typology analysis places 10 of the 17 sectors in Quadrant I (developed and rapidly growing), with none in Quadrant II—a superior profile not possessed by any individual region. This finding provides empirical legitimacy that Greater Tangerang Province has a strong, diversified economic foundation, worthy of standing as a new, fiscally independent and sustainable autonomous region.
