Abstract

Asthma is a respiratory tract disorder characterized by inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness, resulting in symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. The problem at RSUD Dr. R.M. Djoelham, Binjai City, is the difficulty in recognizing the early symptoms of asthma because they are similar to those of other respiratory disorders, as well as the limited knowledge of the community regarding early detection. This study aims to develop an expert system to help identify the possibility of asthma based on symptoms using the Certainty Factor method. This method is used to handle uncertainty by combining the Expert CF and User CF values for the selected symptoms. The diagnosis is determined based on the highest Certainty Factor value. Based on testing using the symptoms experienced, namely difficulty breathing, especially during activities; shortness of breath when exposed to dust; fatigue during activities; sneezing and runny nose due to allergies; itchy eyes during allergic reactions; and shortness of breath due to weather changes, the results showed that Extrinsic Asthma obtained a value of 0.9828 or 98.28%, Intrinsic Asthma obtained 0.3600 or 36.00%, and Bronchoconstriction Asthma obtained 0.3200 or 32.00%. The highest value was obtained by Extrinsic Asthma at 98.28%, making it the diagnosis with the highest level of certainty. This system can assist in the early identification of asthma quickly and systematically.
