Abstract

This study aims to explore the dynamics of the flow experience among Generation Z participants in the ‘Ngaji Filsafat’ (Philosophy Study Group) activities at the Jenderal Sudirman Mosque (MJS) in Yogyakarta. The study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method. The research participants consist of three Generation Z individuals who actively participate in the Philosophy Study Group and were identified as experiencing flow during the sessions. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analysed to understand the psychological processes shaping the participants’ flow experiences. The results indicate that the flow experience is formed through a gradual process, initiated by a search for meaning arising from life’s pressures and existential confusion. Personal resonance with the material, the facilitator’s reflective delivery, and a calm, supportive collective atmosphere reinforced the participants’ engagement in the study. Participants also consciously regulated their attention to manage digital distractions whilst the activity was taking place. The flow experience was characterised by deep focus, a distortion of time, a reduced awareness of the surrounding environment and bodily sensations, as well as the emergence of insights and psychological calm. This study demonstrates that flow among Generation Z can emerge within the context of non-formal learning that is reflective, contemplative, and personally meaningful.
