Abstract

The era of globalization has led to behavioral changes and dietary imbalances—often coupled with low physical activity—resulting in increased Body Mass Index (BMI) and affecting physical fitness. BMI measurements of employees at the Sanankulon Community Health Center (UPT Puskesmas) in 2022 revealed that 39% were obese and 15% were overweight, while 40% had poor fitness and 30% had fair fitness. Several studies indicate that physical activity and BMI influence physical fitness. This study aimed to explain the relationship between physical activity, BMI, and physical fitness. A correlational research design was employed using purposive sampling. The study population consisted of 50 employees from the Sanankulon Community Health Center, with a sample size of 46. Results showed that 4 employees (8.7%) had high physical activity levels, 19 (41.3%) had moderate levels, and 23 (50%) had low levels. Regarding BMI, 2 individuals (4.3%) were underweight, 18 (39.1%) were normal weight, 11 (23.9%) were mildly overweight, and 15 (32.6%) were heavily overweight. Physical fitness levels were good for 2 individuals (8.7%), fair for 23 (50%), and poor for 21 (45.7%). Spearman Rank correlation tests yielded a p-value of 0.001 and a correlation coefficient of 0.477 for the relationship between physical activity and physical fitness, indicating a weak positive relationship; a p-value of 0.01 and a correlation coefficient of 0.477 for the relationship between BMI and physical fitness, also indicating a weak positive relationship; and a p-value of 0.029 with a correlation coefficient of 0.322. The results of this study are expected to enable nurses to understand that increasing physical activity and maintaining a normal Body Mass Index serve as the foundation for consistently maintaining physical fitness
