Abstract

Low of electrical power factor in industry increases power losses and loading still far from the available capacity has the potential to increase operational load. The objective of this research is to improve the power factor and to reduce power losses in all percentages of electrical system load at PT Putra Agung Setia using centralized capacitor bank. The method of research begins with an analysis of load profile data then creation of linear regression functions and alternative loading. Next, capacitor bank planning and power loss calculations are carried out. The results of research show that the lowest and highest loading percentage values when the system experiences power factor problems are 4.388% and 15.038%, then the linear regression model is obtained with the equation y = -1.9273 + 1.6188x. Linear regression model was created with baseline load profile. Alternative load scenarios were defined by 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% higher than the highest baseline value. All alternative scenarios exhibited low power factor. The increase of power factor was carried out in percentage of loading at 4.388% to 100%. The reference target power factor improvement is set at 1. The results of Capacitor bank planning shows the need values of 2.5 kVAR, 5 kVAR, 10 kVAR, 20 kVAR, 40 kVAR, and 80 kVAR. The results of power factor improvement shows that the average power factor increases, while power losses decrease. The average power factor in the baseline and alternative scenarios increases to near 1, while power losses decrease to near 0 kW.
