Abstract

Baby blues syndrome is an emotional disturbance commonly experienced by mothers during the early postpartum period and may hinder psychological adjustment if left untreated. This study aims to analyze husbands’ interpersonal communication approaches in helping wives cope with baby blues syndrome. The research employed a qualitative approach with a multiple case study design involving five married couples in Garut Regency, West Java. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model through the perspective of Social Penetration Theory. The findings show that husbands’ communication plays an important role through two dimensions: communication breadth and communication depth. Breadth was reflected in discussions about mothers’ physical needs, infant care, and role changes, while depth appeared in wives’ emotional openness, empathy, validation, and psychological safety. Empathic, supportive, and responsive communication helped reduce wives’ emotional distress. In contrast, communication focused solely on technical matters tended to hinder emotional disclosure.
