Abstract

Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) is a common complication among patients undergoing cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. Lemon aromatherapy is a non-pharmacological, complementary intervention that can help reduce the intensity of nausea and vomiting by stimulating the olfactory system and utilizing the volatile compounds found in lemon essential oil. This study aimed to determine the effect of lemon aromatherapy on PONV in patients who underwent cesarean section with spinal anesthesia at the Purwokerto Islamic Hospital. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 15 patients selected via total sampling. The intervention involved inhaling 0.5 cc of lemon essential oil applied to a cotton pad, held 5 cm from the nose for 10 minutes. PONV intensity was measured using the 0–10 Numeric Rating Scale. The mean PONV score decreased from 4.40 to 1.40. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test yielded a Z-value of -3.438 and a p-value of 0.001 (p<0.05), indicating a significant effect of lemon aromatherapy on the reduction of PONV. This intervention offers a simple, practical, and easily implemented option within nursing care to support patient comfort during the postoperative recovery period.
