Abstract

Video streaming services need high network availability because they react badly to delays, jitter, and packet loss. If a gateway or main path fails, the service can be disrupted hard if there is no backup. This study looks at how well a failover system works when we use the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) together with Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) for load balancing on a virtual network. We also check how it changes the quality of video streaming. The network was built in GNS3 with two routers acting as VRRP master and backup, two OSPF routers providing redundant paths, one video streaming server, and several client nodes. Tests ran in normal mode and with intentional link cuts to see the effect on Quality of Service (QoS) metrics: delay, jitter, packet loss, throughput, and how fast failover happens. Results show that VRRP and OSPF can automatically send traffic to the backup path within a certain time, causing only small interruption to video streaming compared to a setup without redundancy. OSPF’s equal cost multi path load balancing also spread traffic across both paths, making bandwidth use more efficient. This research can help design reliable networks for real time media services.
