Abstract

Organic and inorganic waste sorting is a simple waste management practice that needs to be introduced from an early age. Limited understanding of waste types and proper waste management may influence students' waste disposal habits. This activity aimed to improve students' knowledge of organic and inorganic waste sorting and management through educational activities and direct practice. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed involving 38 sixth-grade students at SDN 1 Cileles. The educational intervention consisted of interactive lectures, group discussions, visual analysis, question-and-answer sessions, and direct waste-sorting practice using specially prepared organic and inorganic waste bins. Students' knowledge was measured using pretest and posttest scores and analyzed descriptively using mean scores and normalized gain (N-gain). The results showed that the mean pretest score increased from 58.42 to 72.37 in the posttest, with a mean N-gain of 0.214, categorized as low. These findings indicate an increase in students' knowledge after participating in the educational activities, although the improvement was not optimal. Direct practice using separated waste bins provided students with an applicable learning experience in implementing waste-sorting concepts. Similar educational activities should be conducted continuously through habituation and the provision of appropriate waste-sorting facilities in the school environment.
