Abstract

Electric motors are critical components of separator machines in palm oil mills; operating continuously at high speeds, they are susceptible to performance degradation caused by overheating, imbalance, misalignment, or bearing failure. Motor failure can lead to production stoppages, increased maintenance costs, and reduced operational efficiency. This study aims to evaluate the performance of electric motors in separator machines using temperature and vibration parameters as primary indicators for the early detection of faults. A condition-based monitoring approach was employed, involving temperature measurements via infrared thermal cameras and vibration measurements using a vibration analyzer at specific monitoring points on the motor during normal operation. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and compared against standard machine condition limits based on vibration severity classifications and motor operating temperature characteristics. The analysis revealed that an increase in motor temperature was consistently accompanied by a rise in vibration amplitude, indicating a correlation between thermal load and mechanical condition degradation. Vibration patterns dominant at the rotational frequency indicated early signs of rotor imbalance and bearing wear, while temperature increases pointed to reduced cooling system effectiveness and higher electrical losses. The condition evaluation demonstrated that temperature and vibration parameters could detect changes in motor performance prior to functional failure. Consequently, integrating these parameters can serve as a basis for implementing predictive maintenance to enhance electric motor reliability, minimize downtime, and optimize separator machine productivity in palm oil mills. These findings support the implementation of condition-based maintenance for critical equipment in the palm oil processing industry.
