Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of picture series media in improving short story writing skills. The low writing ability of fourth-grade students in expressing ideas, organizing plots, and applying spelling rules motivated this research. A quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed with 18 fourth-grade students selected through non-probability sampling. Data were collected using observation, a seven-aspect short story writing test, and documentation. The instrument was validated (r = 0.538-0.820) and found reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.738). Paired sample t-test and N-gain analyses were used. The results showed that the mean score increased from 54.22 (pretest) to 77.83 (posttest), with a mean difference of 23.61 points (t = 16.098; df = 17; p < 0.001), and an N-gain of 0.518 (moderate category). Mastery increased from 0% to 66.7%. Aspect-level analysis revealed that characterization, creativity, and spelling improved markedly, while language use barely changed. Picture series media proved effective in overcoming idea-generation and narrative-structure difficulties, though it did not automatically improve diction and grammar, which require explicit vocabulary and mechanics instruction.
