Abstract

The waste problem in Bandung has become increasingly complex due to population growth and changing consumption patterns, which have led to an increase in the volume, types, and characteristics of waste. The Bandung City Government is promoting the reduction of waste sent to landfills through the waste bank program to raise public environmental awareness. The An-Nisa Waste Bank, a pioneer in RW 01 Kebon Kangkung, Bandung, has transformed waste from useless refuse into a valuable economic resource—particularly for housewives, who serve as its primary clients—through a simple and effective operational system. The objective of this study is to examine how the An-Nisa Waste Bank operates to offer guidance for other inorganic waste banks in the city. Employing a quantitative method, the research focuses on this active waste bank to evaluate its operational framework. Based on the research findings, the An-Nisa Waste Bank has contributed to reducing the volume of inorganic waste by approximately 0.7–0.8 tons per month, with an economic value of up to Rp 1,400,000 per month. Waste management through a waste bank can be considered a form of religious devotion, as productive waste management protects the earth from damage and improves community well-being. Additionally, the managers of the An-Nisa Waste Bank have successfully addressed funding challenges by securing donations for waste bank activities and other initiatives to ensure the program’s sustainability and strengthen bonds among participants.
