Mountain climbing has long been socially constructed as a masculine activity associated with physical strength, courage, endurance, and leadership. Consequently, female hikers frequently encounter gender stereotypes that question their physical capabilities, technical competence, and leadership capacity in outdoor activities. This study aims to analyze the role of the Lagidigunung community in challenging gender stereotypes toward female hikers in Malang City, Indonesia. The study employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through participant observation during community activities in the Greater Malang area between 2024 and 2025, in-depth interviews with the founder, community leaders, and members, as well as documentation of community activities. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, supported by the perspectives of intersectional feminism and Social Identity Theory. The findings reveal that Lagidigunung functions as a social space that promotes women's empowerment by providing equal opportunities in leadership, decision-making, route navigation, trail opening, and educational activities within the community. These practices represent a form of resistance to patriarchal constructions that traditionally associate mountain climbing with masculine identities. Furthermore, social solidarity among members and the representation of women through the community’s social media platforms contribute to the formation of a collective identity characterized by confidence, independence, competence, and resilience among female hikers. The study demonstrates that the process of challenging gender stereotypes is not merely reflected in the increasing participation of women in mountain climbing activities, but also in the community's active efforts to create inclusive spaces for leadership, social support, and positive representation. The novelty of this research lies in its examination of a local hiking community as an agent of social transformation that not only deconstructs gender stereotypes but also facilitates the construction of a collective social identity among female hikers. This study contributes to the development of gender and community sociology by highlighting how recreational communities can serve as strategic arenas for promoting gender equality in public spaces.
