Abstract

The phenomenon of fatherlessness due to divorce significantly impacts individual psychological development, particularly among young adult men. The absence of a father figure not only creates feelings of loss and emotional emptiness but also affects the formation of self-concept, self-confidence, and social relationships. This study aims to analyze the impact of fatherlessness due to divorce on young adult men, identify the coping strategies they use, and evaluate the role of emotional intelligence in the effectiveness of coping. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving young adult male participants who experienced fatherlessness since childhood or adolescence. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis, focusing on patterns of problem-focused and emotion-focused coping. Findings indicate that participants employed two main forms of coping strategies: problem-focused coping (active efforts to improve themselves, develop skills, and seek new life goals) and emotion-focused coping (managing emotions through prayer, self-reflection, and sharing experiences). Social support, especially from mothers and siblings, played a crucial role as a protective factor in psychological adaptation. Emotional intelligence was identified as a key factor influencing the effectiveness of coping strategies. These findings imply that practical interventions aimed at enhancing emotional intelligence and social support can strengthen coping mechanisms in young adult men experiencing fatherlessness. The study also contributes theoretically by highlighting the interplay between fatherlessness, coping strategies, and emotional regulation in early adulthood.
