Abstract

This study explored the integration of deep learning pedagogy and a Love-Based Curriculum in enhancing student engagement in Islamic Religious Education. A qualitative case-study design was employed at SDN Tugu Utara 03 Jakarta, Indonesia, from November to December 2025. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of instructional documents. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and validated through source and method triangulation. The findings revealed that the integrated approach was implemented through three stages: planning, classroom instruction, and evaluation. The teacher combined mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning with compassion, empathy, respect, and supportive interaction. Implementation challenges included limited understanding of deep learning, classroom-management difficulties, inadequate variation in instructional media, and diverse student characteristics. The teacher addressed these challenges through professional development, diversified teaching strategies, stronger emotional relationships, and a supportive classroom environment. These efforts promoted students’ mental, verbal, physical, and emotional engagement, as reflected in greater attention, participation, collaboration, confidence, and enthusiasm. The study demonstrates that cognitively meaningful activities supported by caring relationships can make primary Islamic Religious Education more participatory, reflective, contextual, and humanizing.
