Abstract

Hypertension is a health issue that can be controlled through lifestyle modifications, including the implementation of the DASH diet. This study aims to determine the effect of DASH diet education on the knowledge level and blood pressure of hypertensive patients at Rumah Sakit Islam Jakarta Cempaka Putih. This study employed a Pre-Experimental One Group Pretest-Posttest design with a sample size of 28 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Education was provided through lectures and leaflets for 30 minutes. Data were collected using knowledge questionnaires and blood pressure measurements before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk and Wilcoxon tests since some of the data were not normally distributed. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge (p = 0.001) as well as a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.001). In conclusion, DASH diet education is effective in increasing knowledge and helping to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

Abstract

Hypertension is a cardiovascular disorder characterized by persistently elevated blood pressure and can lead to serious complications if not properly managed. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to lower blood pressure is isometric handgrip exercise. This study aimed to determine the effect of isometric handgrip exercise on reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients in the Inpatient Ward of RSIJ Cempaka Putih. The study used a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design with a sample of 30 respondents. Blood pressure measurements were taken before and after the intervention. Normality testing using the Shapiro–Wilk test showed that both systolic and diastolic blood pressure data had p-values < 0.05, indicating that the data were not normally distributed. Therefore, the analysis was continued using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed that isometric handgrip exercise reduced blood pressure in the majority of respondents. The Wilcoxon test yielded p = 0.001 for systolic blood pressure and p = 0.001 for diastolic blood pressure, indicating a statistically significant effect of isometric handgrip exercise on blood pressure reduction (p < 0.05). Thus, isometric handgrip exercise can serve as a simple, safe, and effective non-pharmacological intervention to help control blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the chronic diseases with an increasing prevalence and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Smoking is the main risk factor for COPD and affects the severity of the disease. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between smoking behavior and the severity of COPD at the Polyclinic of Rumah Sakit Islam Jakarta Cempaka Putih. Methods: This study used a correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was obtained using the Simple Random Sampling technique, consisting of 40 respondents selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Smoking behavior data were collected using the Brinkman Index questionnaire, while COPD severity was obtained from spirometry results based on the GOLD classification. Relationship analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank statistical test. Results: The Spearman Rank test showed a p-value = 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating that there is a relationship between smoking behavior and COPD severity. The correlation coefficient value was r = 0.561, indicating a positive relationship with a strong correlation between smoking behavior and COPD severity. Conclusion: This study states that smoking behavior is associated with the severity of COPD at the Polyclinic of Rumah Sakit Islam Jakarta Cempaka Putih, as indicated by a significant positive relationship. The greater the exposure to cigarettes, the more severe the degree of COPD. Therefore, it is very important for patients to stop smoking habits in order to maintain lung health and their quality of life.
