Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' learning difficulties in understanding basic science concepts with a contextual approach in class VII of SMP Negeri 2 Teminabuan. The research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through diagnostic tests, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that students' learning difficulties mainly lie in the difficulty in interpreting, explaining, exemplifying and classifying IPA concepts. Students' learning difficulties are also influenced by several internal and external factors. Internally, low concentration, limited reading skills, and lack of learning motivation are the main causes that hinder students' understanding of the material. Students also have difficulty in interpreting, re-explaining concepts, and answering questions on worksheets, especially on ecosystem material. Externally, monotonous learning methods, such as lectures and assignments, lack variation to increase students' interest in learning. The social distance between students who have learning difficulties and their friends reduces the opportunity to discuss or ask for help. Although the learning facilities are quite adequate, their use is not optimal to support a more interesting and interactive teaching and learning process.
