Abstract

This study aims to examine the Bumbung Kepyak traditional art in Pendem Village, Jembrana District, Jembrana Regency, Bali, from an ethnoscience perspective and to identify its potential to support Science learning at Junior High School. The study utilized a qualitative descriptive method with ethnoscience approach. Data collection was carried out through participant observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The research subjects consisted of Bumbung Kepyak traditional art practitioners and Junior High School science teachers. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results indicated that Bumbung Kepyak art contains various scientific concepts reflected in the materials and tools used, the instrument-making process, and the performance techniques. The identified science concepts include solid pressure, heat transfer, vibrations, waves and sound, friction, as well as energy and its transformations. Furthermore, the findings showed that Bumbung Kepyak art is relevant to the Junior High School science learning outcomes across several topics, namely: temperature and heat; vibrations and waves; motion and force; energy and its transformations; and pressure. Therefore, Bumbung Kepyak art has the potential to be utilized as a contextual learning source based on local wisdom to support science education in junior high schools.
