Abstract

Islamic education in Indonesia faces challenges in connecting Qur’anic values with the realities of modern life, particularly at the junior secondary level (SMP/MTs). Conventional interpretative approaches, which tend to be textual and normative, are often inadequate in fostering critical and contextual thinking among students. This study aims to examine the contextual reform of the interpretation of Surah Al-‘Alaq verses 1–5 in Islamic education at the SMP/MTs level using Fazlur Rahman’s Double Movement methodology. The study employs a library research method with hermeneutic-contextual and philosophical-pedagogical approaches. The findings reveal that the interpretation of Surah Al-‘Alaq verses 1–5 contains five core educational values: (1) tauhid-based education, (2) literacy and intellectual development, (3) humanization of education, (4) the utilization of educational technology, and (5) a lifelong learning culture. Through the Double Movement method, the universal moral messages of the Qur’an can be contextualized into learning practices, resulting in a responsive, critical, and spiritually grounded model of Islamic education. The implications of this study indicate that contextual Qur’anic interpretation can serve as a foundation for curriculum development, innovative learning strategies, and literacy enhancement programs that integrate Islamic values with twenty-first-century educational demands, fostering students balanced intellectual, spiritual, and social competencies
