Abstract

Changes in students’ needs, advances in science and technology, and evolving social demands require curriculum development to be relevant, adaptive, and oriented toward educational goals. This study aims to conceptually analyze the principles, characteristics, and models of curriculum development and to identify the relevance of each model to contemporary educational needs. A qualitative approach with a literature review method was employed. Relevant literature was obtained from books, scholarly articles, and academic journals addressing curriculum design and curriculum development models. Sources were selected based on topical relevance, conceptual alignment, and their contribution to understanding curriculum design and development. The data were analyzed through identification, categorization, comparison, and thematic synthesis of concepts, principles, characteristics, and stages presented in the selected literature. The synthesis indicates that curriculum design functions not merely as a framework for organizing objectives, content, learning experiences, and evaluation, but also as a mechanism for ensuring alignment between curriculum, learners’ needs, educational contexts, and social changes. The Tyler model emphasizes systematic and objective-oriented development; the Taba model highlights an inductive approach and learners’ needs; the Olivia model provides a comprehensive and systematic framework; while the Beauchamp model emphasizes institutional organization, implementation, and evaluation. These findings suggest that no single curriculum development model is universally applicable. Rather, curriculum effectiveness depends on contextual adaptation and the integration of relevant principles from different models. The study has practical implications for educators and curriculum developers by providing a conceptual basis for selecting and adapting curriculum development models in accordance with institutional contexts, learner needs, and contemporary educational demands
