Abstract

The development of Samarium-based bioceramics, in the form of a seed, has the opportunity of solidcancers treatment using the brachytherapy method. Brachytherapy is a radiotherapy procedure whereradioactive sources is placed inside to theneo-plastic cancer tissues by implantation. This method canincrease radiation doses on the cancer tissues by applying a tiny radiation source. The ceramic seeds with Samarium-153, is biodegradable and beta-emitter radionuclide, is very likely to replace existing method of brachytherapy using radioactive metal-seeds. The raw material of ceramic seeds with samarium consists of samarium nitrate as samarium precursor and isotope target, calcium nitrate hydrate (Ca(NO3)2.4H2O as filler, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (Si(OC2H5)4 as a additive. Synthesis of ceramic seeds with samarium was conducted by sol gelprocesings, sintering, mixing with Polivynil Alcohol (PVA), molding and combusting. The raw material mixtures of ceramic seeds with samarium is characterized by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The morphology of ceramic seed both before and after combustion is analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Based on TGA analysis. The raw materials mixtures of the ceramic seeds was decomposed at temperature of 100 oC - 550 oC.
