Abstract

This study aimed to utilize robusta coffee grounds waste from coffee shops in Tampan District as a raw material for an eco-friendly mosquito-repellent lotion. Approximately 20 coffee shops generate coffee grounds waste that is not optimally managed, with each shop producing around 20 kg per month. Robusta coffee grounds still contain secondary metabolites with potential repellent activity. Extraction was performed using the maceration method, and bioactive compounds were identified by phytochemical screening. The results showed that the ethanol extract of robusta coffee grounds (Coffea canephora) contained alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenolics, tannins, and terpenoids. The extract was formulated into lotion preparations containing 2% and 4% extract concentrations. Both formulations were homogeneous, had a pH of 7.4, caused no skin irritation, and remained stable for three days at room temperature. Physical quality evaluations, including homogeneity, pH, adhesion, spreadability, organoleptic, and irritation tests, met the required standards. Effectiveness testing against Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes showed that consentration 2% was more effective than consentration  4%, with the first mosquito landing occurring at 49 minutes for consentration 4% and 7 minutes for consentration 2%. These findings indicate that robusta coffee grounds have potential as an eco-friendly mosquito-repellent lotion.
