Abstract

Antibiotic pollution, specifically enrofloxacin (ENR) in aquatic environments is a concern due to its potential to drive antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a hydrochar (HC), derived from coconut coir, as an ENR adsorbent in a batch system. Experiments were conducted by varying pH (3–11), initial ENR concentration (5–20 mg/L), adsorbent dosage (1–2.5 g/L), water matrix type (distilled water, rainwater, tap water, and river water), and contact time. The results showed the highest ENR removal efficiency at pH 3, an adsorbent dosage of 2.5 g/L, an initial ENR concentration of 1 mg/L, and in a river water matrix. Kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.984, indicating the dominance of a chemisorption mechanism. The hydrochar shows potential as an eco-friendly adsorbent for treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.
