Abstract

Wood is a sustainable construction material widely used in coastal buildings due to its availability, light weight, and high aesthetic value. This study aims to evaluate the structural condition, material capacity, and potential mechanical weaknesses of the timber truss system at the Macaronis Resort, Mentawai Islands. The evaluation was conducted through direct field measurements, visual inspection, and analytical analysis based on the SNI 7973:2013 standard. The structural system uses Surian Wood (Toona sinensis) with a King Post truss configuration and nail and bolt connections. The analysis results indicate that the cross-sectional capacity against axial compressive and tensile forces still meets safety requirements under standard vertical loading. However, a critical weakness was identified in the lateral stiffness of the structure due to the absence of longitudinal diagonal bracing. The use of single nail connections triggers eccentricity and local displacement at the nodes. The humid coastal environment also increases the risk of stem buckling, termite infestation, and biological decay of the timber elements. To maintain the safety and long-term reliability of the structure, reinforcement is recommended in the form of using double steel node plates with bolts, installing diagonal wind ties, and applying anti-termite preservatives.
