Abstract

Rapid change requires leaders to adjust their actions without losing their ethical grounding. Adaptive leadership scholarship has explained challenge diagnosis, learning mobilization, distress regulation, and experimentation, but has not fully specified the moral sources that prevent adaptation from becoming opportunism. Conversely, Asthabrata is more often treated as eight discrete normative traits than as a dynamic system of action. This article reconstructs Asthabrata into a contextual adaptive leadership model named Woluning Atunggal. The study adopts a conceptual-paper design combining theory adaptation and an integrative review. Literature was purposively selected from Asthabrata sources, studies of Javanese and Indonesian leadership, and scholarship on adaptive, flexible, complexity, ethical, and paradoxical leadership. The analysis involved concept clarification, functional translation, relational pairing, mechanism building, and proposition development. The reconstruction yields four paired functions: Surya–Candra for directing meaning and regulating relational temperature; Bayu–Samudra for sensing change and containing diversity; Agni–Kartika for activating correction and maintaining orientation; and Pertiwi–Angkasa for sustaining life and enabling the emergence of solutions. The eight practices are integrated through contextual diagnosis, paradox balancing, and response orchestration, thereby generating ethical adaptive fit. The article develops eight propositions, specifies boundary conditions, and outlines an empirical research agenda. Its principal contribution is to reposition Asthabrata from a catalogue of character virtues into a relational, configurational, dynamic, and testable leadership architecture while adding a moral-ecological anchor to adaptive leadership theory.
