Abstract

Indonesia’s legal pluralism requires law students to develop comparative analytical skills to understand the similarities, differences, and applications of various customary law systems. However, these skills still require strengthening through systematic learning. This study aims to assess and develop the comparative analytical skills of fifth-semester students in the Law Study Program at Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara in the Customary Law course. The study employed a quantitative approach using a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design. All nine fifth-semester students from Class C in the 2026/1 academic year were included through total sampling. The research instrument was a comparative analytical test covering the identification of characteristics, analysis of similarities and differences, evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, and synthesis of customary law systems within the context of Indonesian legal pluralism. Expert validation yielded an average validity index of 0.87. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and N-Gain. The results revealed a significant improvement in comparative analytical skills (Z = −2.67; p = 0.008), with an N-Gain of 0.63 (moderate category). These findings indicate the potential of systematic comparative learning to strengthen students’ customary law reasoning. The study recommends enhancing cross-system customary law analysis, particularly in understanding the relationships among legal norms, institutions, and community practices, although its causal effectiveness requires further examination using a comparison group.
