Abstract

Avoidant attachment is a dimension of insecure attachment characterized by discomfort with emotional closeness, a tendency to suppress the need for support, and a preference for self-reliance. This article provides a narrative review of the potentially adaptive and maladaptive impacts of such behavior on emotion regulation, social support, mental health, and the quality of romantic relationships. The review synthesizes scientific literature, including conceptual articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. The literature indicates that maintaining distance can provide space for self-regulation or the preservation of personal boundaries in certain situations. However, when this strategy is employed rigidly, it is associated with lower relationship satisfaction, difficulties in giving and receiving support, and poorer mental health outcomes. The impact of avoidant attachment is not absolute, as it is influenced by context, the intensity of the avoidant pattern, and relationship dynamics. This review concludes that independence is not inherently problematic; issues arise when the need for autonomy hinders communication, intimacy, and the acceptance of support.
