Abstract

Background: Stroke is a sudden or rapidly developing disruption of brain function that can lead to motor, sensory, cognitive, and communication impairments, affecting daily activities. One common consequence is decreased muscle strength, particularly in the upper extremities. A non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied is rubber ball gripping exercise. Objective: To determine the effect of rubber ball gripping therapy on improving upper extremity muscle strength in stroke patients. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study approach involving two respondents diagnosed with stroke. Muscle strength was measured using a handgrip dynamometer before and after the intervention. The therapy was administered twice daily for four days, with a duration of 10–15 minutes per session. Results: The results showed an increase in muscle strength in both respondents. The first respondent’s muscle strength increased from 25.9 kg to 29.5 kg, while the second respondent’s increased from 26.5 kg to 30.3 kg. Conclusion: Rubber ball gripping therapy can help improve upper extremity muscle strength in stroke patients, although the improvement has not yet reached the normal category.
