Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic nation situated in the tropics and surrounded by the sea. Yet, regrettably, water crises occur in various regions during every dry season. The potential of seawater and solar energy has not been fully harnessed to meet clean water needs through desalination. This research aims to design and construct an adjustable, portable solar desalinator based on the principles of evaporation and condensation. Material and component selection was tailored to the application, in which aluminum was used for both the frame and the absorber plate. The support legs featured 180° hinges, allowing the tilt angle of the plate to be adjusted. Structural integrity was analyzed using the Finite Element Method with various loads based on the density of the working fluid, namely freshwater, seawater, metallic sediment water, and muddy water. The finite element simulation revealed that the selected materials and components are robust to support the weight of seawater or metallic sediment water at full capacity. The maximum stress for desalinator contains full seawater is 38.1 MPa, resulting in 2.27 mm displacement along the absorber plate.
