Abstract

Intoduction: Health is the condition of the entire body and body parts of an individual who is free from disease both physically, mentally and socially, thus enabling the individual to be able to carry out daily activities more productively. However, many people neglect their own health, especially in the field of dental and oral health. Caries is one of the most common oral and dental problems. The prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia is high, namely 88.8%. Dental caries is caused by Streptococcus mutans bacteria which plays a role in the conversion of sucrose to lactic acid. Infection due to Streptococcus mutans bacteria can be treated by taking antibiotics. Apart from drugs, antibiotics can also be obtained from natural ingredients, one of which is the tintir castor plant (Jatropha multifida Linn) or commonly known as the betadine. Objective: To see the effect of the antibacterial content of tintir leaves against Streptococcus mutans bacteria and to determine the differences in the antibacterial effect of betadine leaf extract (Jatropha multifida L.) from a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: The type of research used in this study was a laboratory experimental study with a post-test-only control group design as the research design and to test the sensitivity of bacteria using the paper disc diffusion test. Data analysis using One-Way ANOVA. Result: The results of this study indicate the effect of tintir castor leaf extract (Jatropha multifida L.) in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria.

Abstract

Abstract

One aspect of appearance that increases self-confidence among students is having an aesthetic smile. To achieve this, it is important to pay attention to the anterior teeth because the appearance of the teeth determines aesthetic appeal. If the anterior teeth experience malocclusion, this has an impact on reducing the level of self-confidence, creating difficulty interacting socially, and creating dissatisfaction with the appearance of the anterior teeth for students. To fill the gap, this study aims to further investigate the relationship between the satisfaction level of the dental education undergraduate study program in the appearance of anterior teeth in terms of orthodontic treatment at Universitas Prima Indonesia. A total of 44 respondents were students of the dental education undergraduate study program who were sampled in the study using the online survey method. This study used univariate and bivariate analysis through SPSS v.24. There is a significant relationship between fixed orthodontic treatment and the satisfaction of the appearance of the anterior teeth of UNPRI dental education undergraduate students.

Abstract

Worldwide, 45–97% of people chew food with only one side of their mouth. It is possible that chewing may act as a natural cleanser. One side of the mouth is more susceptible to the development of calculus and plaque when chewing, while the other side naturally removes debris and improves hygiene. Chewing behavior on one side causes a buildup of food detritus, resulting in low oral status. This study aims to explore the influence of one-sided chewing habits on the occurrence of caries, calculus, and oral status hygiene in Students of SMP Islam Terpadu Nurul Fadhilah Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, Indonesia. This study is an analytical observational research with a cross-sectional approach. This study uses primary data obtained from observations of the subject study. A total of 50 research subjects took part in this study. The incidence of caries, calculus, and oral hygiene status is influenced by one-sided chewing patterns. One-sided chewing patterns increase the caries index calculus index and reduce oral hygiene status.

Abstract

Gingivitis, a prevalent inflammatory condition affecting the gums, is primarily caused by plaque accumulation. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, suggesting its potential as an adjunctive therapy for gingivitis management. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of green tea mouthwash in reducing gingival inflammation. This study employed a quasi-experimental design to investigate the effects of green tea mouthwash on gingival inflammation. A total of 30 participants with mild to moderate gingivitis were recruited from the GBI Miracle Service Medan church in Medan, Indonesia. The participants were instructed to rinse their mouths with green tea mouthwash twice daily, after breakfast and before bedtime, for a period of one week. The green tea mouthwash was prepared by steeping one tablespoon of dried green tea leaves in 250 ml of hot water for 5 minutes, and then cooled to room temperature before use. Gingival index (GI) scores were assessed at baseline and after one week of intervention, which involves examining each tooth at four sites (mesial, distal, facial, and lingual) and assigning a score of 0 to 3 based on the severity of inflammation. The study found a significant reduction in gingival inflammation after one week of using green tea mouthwash. The mean GI score decreased from 2.04 ± 0.401 at baseline to 0.91 ± 0.364 after the intervention, indicating a shift from moderate to mild inflammation (p < 0.05). This improvement in gingival health can be attributed to the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of green tea, particularly its catechin content, which has been shown to inhibit the growth of oral bacteria and reduce inflammatory responses. In conclusion, the findings of this study provide further evidence supporting the use of green tea mouthwash as an adjunctive therapy for gingivitis management. Its efficacy in reducing gingival inflammation, coupled with its natural and readily available nature, makes it a promising option for improving oral health.

Abstract

Halitosis, or bad breath, is a prevalent oral health issue primarily caused by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by the microbial breakdown of food particles in the oral cavity. The accumulation of dental plaque, a biofilm composed of bacteria and their byproducts, provides a conducive environment for VSC production. Red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties, including its potential benefits for oral health. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of red betel leaf mouthwash in controlling plaque and preventing halitosis. A pre-experimental study design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach was employed. Participants were recruited from a high school student council, with a sample size of 20 students. The intervention involved the use of red betel leaf mouthwash over a period of one week. The plaque index was assessed using the Loe and Silness index before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the paired T-test to determine the significance of changes in the plaque index. The mean plaque index before using the red betel leaf mouthwash was 2.15 ± 0.676, which decreased significantly to 0.94 ± 0.562 after one week of intervention (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). This indicates a substantial reduction in plaque accumulation following the use of red betel leaf mouthwash. Red betel leaf mouthwash demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing plaque index, suggesting its potential as an effective natural alternative for plaque control and halitosis prevention. Further research with larger sample sizes and control groups is recommended to confirm these findings and explore the long-term effects of red betel leaf mouthwash on oral health.
