Abstract

Emergency nurses must make rapid decisions while regulating emotions under time pressure. This study examined cognitive workload, cognitive reappraisal, and expressive suppression before and after Basic Trauma Cardiac Life Support (BTCLS) training. A one-group pretest–posttest study involved 44 nurses in Cirebon, Indonesia. Adapted NASA Task Load Index and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire instruments were administered before and after training. Paired differences were tested with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Mean cognitive workload changed from 19.61 ± 3.93 to 20.20 ± 5.00, cognitive reappraisal from 22.30 ± 2.70 to 22.23 ± 2.94, and expressive suppression from 16.32 ± 4.24 to 16.20 ± 4.38. None of the differences was statistically significant (p = .386, .762, and .839, respectively). In this sample, BTCLS training was not associated with significant short-term changes in these outcomes. Emergency training evaluation may benefit from repeated practice, follow-up, and specific emotion-regulation components.
