Abstract

This study examines the principles of healthy eating found in the Qur’an and their connection to Ibn ‘Ashur’s concept of hifdz al-nafs (preservation of life) and modern health science perspectives. The study aims to identify the food consumption principles recommended by the Qur’an and analyze their relevance to maintaining human health. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing tafsir maudhu’i (thematic exegesis) and library research methods. Data were gathered by identifying Qur’anic verses related to food and consumption patterns, followed by an analysis involving exegetical literature, the thought of Ibn ‘Ashur, and scientific health sources. Content analysis was used to establish the connections between the Qur’anic message, the concept of hifdz al-nafs, and modern health principles. The results indicate that the healthy eating patterns in the Qur’an are founded on the principles of halalan thayyiban (permissible and wholesome), balance (moderation), safety, hygiene, and nutritional adequacy. These principles not only govern food selection and quantity but also emphasize health maintenance as an integral part of hifdz al-nafs. These findings are relevant to modern health science, particularly regarding balanced nutrition, the selection of safe and high-quality food, and consumption control to prevent health issues. The integration of these three perspectives demonstrates that Qur’anic guidance on diet possesses a preventive dimension that supports efforts to maintain human health and survival.
