Abstract

This research outlined the results of an experimental investigation of the adoption of refractory brick (RB) as a substitute for coarse aggregate in sustainable concrete production. The concrete mix is produced with two water-cement ratios (w/c) of 0.52 and 0.49, containing 0%, 15%, 30%, and 50% RB as a substitute for virgin coarse aggregate (VCA). The mechanical properties tested in this experiment are compressive strength and indirect tensile strength, as well as the relationship between tensile load and time, the ratio of CO₂ₑ to indirect tensile strength, and acceptance criteria. The test results showed that the compressive strength and indirect tensile strength value decreased along with the increasing percentage of RB adoption as in the concrete mixture. In addition, all phases in the load and time relationships, as well as CO₂ₑ, decrease as the percentage of RB in the concrete mixture increases. The results of the acceptance criteria with the adoption of RB, show that the mixture designed with the adoption of RB variations of 15% and 30% can function as an alternative to VCA. For the acceptance criteria for CO₂ₑ against indirect tensile strength based on the SAI analogy, this research provides a maximum difference limit of 20% to be declared acceptable for use as an alternative to VCA. Thus, the use of 15% and 30% RB instead of VCA is an acceptable and feasible option for sustainable concrete production.
