Abstract

The use of multilayer plastic waste, styrofoam, and eggshells in cement-based paving blocks offers an alternative approach to converting waste into construction materials. This study aimed to determine the initial compressive strength of paving blocks incorporating a combination of these three waste materials and compare the results with the requirements of Indonesian Standard SNI 03-0691-1996. A preliminary experiment was conducted using 1,500 g of sand, 700 g of cement, 150 g of plastic, 50 g of styrofoam, 100 g of eggshell powder, and 450 mL of water. Seven paving blocks were produced through manual mixing and compaction and cured by watering for 14 days. Compressive strength was measured using a Universal Testing Machine on one specimen without replication. The tested specimen had a mass of 3,397 g, a reported loaded area of 370.27 cm², a maximum load of 278.0 kN, and a compressive strength of 7.51 MPa. This value was below the minimum individual compressive strength requirement of 8.5 MPa for Grade D. These findings indicate that the waste mixture can be formed into paving blocks; however, its compressive performance requires formulation improvements and further testing using an adequate number of specimens.
