Abstract

Smallholder chicken farming in Kendal Regency faces pressure from rising commercial feed prices (IDR 8,000–12,000/kg), while the Kendal coastal area — particularly the Karangsari and Bandengan Fish Auction Centers (TPI) — produces low-value trash fish (bycatch) that has not been optimally utilized as an alternative protein source for feed. This community service program aimed to strengthen the capacity of the Master Pitung Farmer Group and the Rubek Berkah Fisher/Fish Trader Group to process trash fish into fish meal and chicken feed pellets that meet quality standards (SNI 2715:2013). The program was implemented through the Local Livestock Feed Living Lab, comprising needs assessment, socialization, training and mentoring, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation, involving field observation, interviews, and a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on 7 August 2026 attended by 25 participants. The program's output was a Training Module on Processing Trash Fish into Alternative Chicken Feed, covering a 14-step processing procedure, quality standards, feed formulation, occupational safety principles, and institutional and feasibility aspects. Results showed improved participant understanding of the potential of trash fish as alternative feed, the development of a processing SOP (SOP-IKR-01/ITBS/2026), and the identification of a good practice case (Sida Farm), which reported a feed cost reduction to about IDR 7,000/kg along with increased chicken weight gain. The program also formulated a supply-chain partnership scheme between farmers and fish traders to anticipate seasonal supply risk. These findings suggest that trash fish processing training can serve as a local economic empowerment strategy that supports feed self-reliance and the sustainable use of Kendal's coastal fishery resources.
