Abstract

This study investigated the thermal behavior of a rocket-type biomass burner fueled with wood pellets under varying fuel feed rates and combustion air velocities. The objective was to evaluate the effect of the fuel feed rate and the combustion air velocity on flame temperature, thermal efficiency, and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. The experiments were conducted on a burner equipped with an automatic screw feeder at fuel feed rates of 5, 7, and 9 kg/hour and combustion air velocities of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 m/s. The results showed that increasing the air velocity up to 10 m/s improved combustion performance, as indicated by higher flame temperatures and thermal efficiency together with lower CO emissions. The optimum operating condition was obtained at a fuel feed rate of 9 kg/hour and an air velocity of 10 m/s, which produced the highest flame temperature of 1189,00°C and the highest thermal efficiency of 74,14%. At air velocities above 10 m/s, both the flame temperature and the thermal efficiency decreased owing to the thermal dilution effect of excess air. Among the tested feed rates, 9 kg/hour consistently produced the highest flame temperature and thermal efficiency, followed by 7 kg/hour and 5 kg/hour, whereas the lowest CO concentration of 1,43 ppm was recorded at a feed rate of 7 kg/hour and an air velocity of 14 m/s. These findings highlight the importance of matching the fuel feed rate to the combustion air supply in order to enhance thermal performance and reduce emissions in rocket-type biomass burner systems
