Abstract

Elementary school students' understanding of fish anatomy remains limited, even though fish are marine resources closely connected to daily life in archipelagic regions such as Maluku. This community service activity aimed to improve Grade 5 students' understanding of fish body structure and organ function through Game-Based Learning (GBL). The activity was conducted at SD Negeri 36 Maluku Tengah on 20 August 2026, involving 21 students, through preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. During implementation, the team applied an educational game titled "MISSION: Bongkar Ikan!", consisting of four rounds: (1) Tunjuk Bagian Tubuhnya, introducing external body parts; (2) Aku Organ Apa?, introducing internal organs and their functions; (3) Kalau Organ Ini Rusak?, discussing the impact of organ dysfunction on survival; and (4) Benar atau Salah?, reinforcing understanding through true-false statements. No pre-test was administered; understanding was instead assessed through an individual post-test consisting of 21 questions (one per student) based on a labeled fish diagram. Students showed high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the game, indicating that GBL is an effective, low-cost approach for teaching abstract science concepts in elementary schools with limited facilities. The activity also strengthened collaboration between higher education institutions and elementary schools in building science and marine literacy among the younger generation in the Maluku Islands.
